POSITION: Seasonal Lifeguard for one of City of Stamford aquatic facilities: East Beach, West Beach, Cummings Beach, Yerwood Pool, Heroy Pool or Westhill High School

 

 

FUNCTION: Under the general supervision of the Aquatics Director, Assistant Aquatics Director and Head guard, lifeguards will perform lifeguarding duties to protect the health, safety and welfare of the beach and park visitors. This position requires weekend and holiday work during the summer.

 

 

DUTIES: When on duty as a lifeguard for the City of Stamford, the following duties and rules of conduct are to be followed:

 

1. Watch the water area and beachfront to prevent accidents and injuries. See that necessary precautions are observed to ensure the health, safety and welfare of beach and park visitors. Aid the Aquatics Director, Assistant Aquatics Director or Head Lifeguard in every way necessary to keep the facility running smoothly.

 

2. In the absence of the Aquatics Director, Assistant Aquatics Director and Head Lifeguard, an experienced member of the lifeguard staff will be assigned to assume Lifeguard Supervisor

 

3. Follow the assigned work schedule.

 

4. Report promptly at assigned time of duty and remain at post until designated shift has been completed.

 

5. If unable to work due to an emergency or illness, will notify Head Lifeguard, Assistants Aquatics Director, or Aquatics Director in advance and obtain a substitute member of the lifeguard staff subject to approval of Park Management and/or Lifeguard Supervisor.

 

6. Will go on duty wearing a complete lifeguard uniform, to be worn at all times, as issued by the Stamford Recreation Services Division

 

7. Possess a thorough understanding of and strictly conform to all required emergency training.

 

8. Be responsible for the proper care and maintenance of all first aid, water rescue, emergency, radio, and other beach related equipment and to protect the same from loss and theft.

 

9. Complete neat written reports on all accidents and incidents as necessary.

 

10. Attend all scheduled staff meetings and trainings.

 

11. Participate in a continuous water safety conditioning and drill program and training sessions as required by Stamford Recreation Services Division

 

13. Will not read, write or study while on the beach, on duty, or in the tower.

 

14. Will not smoke or use other tobacco-related products while on duty.

 

15. Will not perform any duty that distracts ability to effectively watch the water.

 

16. Understand that being under the influence of alcoholic beverages, taking any form of narcotics or sleeping while on duty are all grounds for automatic dismissal.

 

17. Will carry all required rescue equipment to and from the beach each day.

 

18. Rotate positions as assigned by the Aquatics Director, Assistant Aquatics Director, and Head Lifeguard. At least one guard will be stationed on each chair at all times. A roving lifeguard will move so as to always be facing the swimming area and will always carry his/her rescue tube.

 

19. Lifeguards will refrain from holding extended conversations with anyone (including staff). When engaged to speak with someone, a lifeguard will be brief and courteous; the lifeguard will ask that they stand so that he/she can still scan the water.

 

20. Allow only lifeguard staff, Park Management or those seeking first aid and minimal information in the guard.

 

21. Lifeguards will not turn their backs to the water under any circumstances. Not only does it look bad, but accidents happen without warning. When walking away from a stand or designated guarded area, a lifeguard will periodically turn around and check the beach and water behind him/her.

 

22. Make certain a qualified staff person covers his/her area before leaving the beach for any reason.

 

23. Enforce the regulations and adhere to the policies of the park and aid in controlling the behavior of those guests who use the facility. (Remind park guests of beach rules when necessary in a polite, firm manner; contact Aquatics Director, Assistant Aquatics Director and Head Lifeguard if necessary.)

 

24. Be a good ambassador; lifeguards are continually in the public eye, their actions create public opinion of the facility and, ultimately, Stamford Recreation Services Division and the City of Stamford.

 

25. Be responsible for helping to maintain the cleanliness of the beachfront and other park areas, including trash and debris pickup.

 

28. Perform related duties as required by the Aquatics Director, Assistant Aquatics Director or Head Lifeguard, including working at another facility when necessary.

 

29. Will carry a rescue tube, whistle and fanny pack at all times, while on duty, at the beach.

 

 

30. Lifeguards may be held liable for actions or omission of actions while on duty.

 

31. A lifeguard may be subject to dismissal because of incompetence.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Duty as a lifeguard will include, but not be limited to, exposure to

 

1. Environmental conditions, sometimes extreme, i.e. sun, wind, salt, ocean currents and conditions, inclement and threatening weather;

 

2. Emergency, rescue or first aid situations of a varied nature which could result in degrees of mental and physical stress;

 

3. Blood-borne pathogens (in-house training for, provided);

 

4. Duty that demands individual to be in the “public eye” for long periods, requiring good communication skills and a professional attitude at all times; includes scrutiny by supervisors relative to a risk management program-- while on duty.

 

5. Professional contact with Public Safety and Emergency personnel.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Preference will be given to those candidates with open water lifeguarding experience.

 

Minimum requirements: Possess current certification in Lifeguarding (American Red Cross or YMCA), and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

 

Ability to complete and maintain training levels of the American Red Cross lifesaving training.

 

3. Ability to follow instructions and work with minimum supervision in a responsible and competent manner; to readily accept direction from those in a supervisory capacity; ability to accept constructive feedback; ability to project good public relations.

 

4. Ability to complete neat, written reports when required.

 

5. Ability to supervise others when required.

 

6. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees and supervisors; to deal courteously and firmly with the general public; demonstrate good judgment, tact, courtesy and maintain good physical health.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All lifeguards hired must meet the following qualifications:

 

1. Successfully pass the required physical, drug screen and rescue examination.

 

2. Demonstrate maturity and be at least 16 years old.

 

3 Produce a certificate of good physical condition as documented by a physician prior to participating in any testing or training.

 

4. Understand this position is seasonal and requires weekend and holiday duty.

 

 

ACCEPTABLE EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Education equivalent to a High School diploma preferred. Experience in open water lifeguarding preferred.
