Head Lifeguard

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Head Lifeguard for various beaches or pools under the jurisdiction of the City of Stamford.

 

FUNCTION: Under the direct supervision of Waterfront director, organizes and directs beachfront lifeguarding activities, safety and maintenance of beachfront and other park areas. Plans, assigns and directs duties of lifeguards. Performs related work as required. This is a working supervisory position. This position requires weekend and holiday work during the summer.

 

DUTIES: The Head Lifeguard is a working lifeguard with supervisory responsibilities. He/she must have a thorough understanding of all lifeguard duties as well as other beach management duties. In addition to regular lifeguard duties, the Head Lifeguard will be expected to:

 

1. Be responsible for the overall safety of visitors while on the beach or in the water.

 

2. Be responsible for the performance and conduct of all lifeguards.

 

3. Schedule all lifeguards’ daily work schedules, breaks, rotations, in-service training, and fitness drills.

 

4. Be present and prepared to participate in all scheduled training sessions and staff meetings.

 

5. Conduct lifeguard staff meetings, if necessary, or as required by Management.

 

6. Be responsible for the condition and cleanliness of all lifeguard and lifesaving equipment. This includes daily checks of lifesaving and first aid equipment, and emergency radio equipment. Report any equipment not in proper working order to Aquatics Director immediately.

 

7. Be responsible for the inventory of first aid supplies on a weekly basis. Inform Aquatics Director of necessary supplies

 

8. Plan and conduct in-service training drills for physical fitness and emergency procedures.

 

9. Supervise lifeguards in set-up and break-down of rescue and communications equipment. Equipment must also be cleaned and stored daily. Responsible for all required equipment being stationed on the beachfront, daily.

 

10. Assist in and direct others in proper first aid and lifesaving procedures, making sure that proper assistance is called for when necessary.

 

11. Handle visitor complaints and refer to Management.

 

12. Perform related management duties as required by the Assistant Superintendent or Aquatics Director.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Duty as Head Lifeguard will include, but not be limited to, exposure to

 

1. Environmental conditions, i.e. sun, wind, salt, ocean currents and conditions, inclement weather;

 

2. Emergency, rescue or first aid situations of a varied nature which could result in degrees of mental and physical stress;

 

3. Blood-borne pathogens (in-house training for, provided);

 

4. Duty that demands individual to be in the “public eye” for long periods, requiring good communication skills and a professional attitude at all times; including scrutiny by supervisors via videotape, interview and/ or skills tests-- relative to a risk management program-- while on duty;

 

5. Professional contact with Public Safety and Emergency personnel.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The Head Lifeguard should have training and 2 years of experience in pool or open water beach lifeguarding. Must have thorough knowledge and skills in the methods and practices of waterfront safety; general knowledge and skills related to the operation of an waterfront facility; must be honest, mature, dependable and able to maintain effective working relationship with fellow employees, supervisors and the general public.

 

1. Minimum requirements: must be certified in Lifeguarding, either American Red Cross or YMCA; certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

2. Ability to complete and maintain training levels of American Red Cross and Stamford Recreation Services Division.

 

3. Ability to supervise others effectively.

 

4. Ability to follow instructions and to work with minimum supervision in a responsible and competent manner; to readily accept directions from those in a supervisory capacity; to be able to accept constructive feedback; and to project good public relations.

 

5. Ability to prepare neat and complete written reports as required.

 

6. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees; deal courteously and firmly with the public; demonstrate good judgment, tact and courtesy and maintain good physical health.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Head Lifeguard must meet the following qualifications:

 

1. Produce a certificate of good physical condition signed by a physician prior to participating in any testing or training. The City of Stamford requires physicals and drug screen with employment.

 

2. Successfully pass the required physical and rescue examination.

 

3. Demonstrate maturity and be at least 17 years of age.

 

4. Possess a valid vehicle operator’s license.

 

5. Understand this position is seasonal and requires weekend and holiday duty.

 

ACCEPTABLE EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Education equivalent to High School diploma. At least 2 years’ experience in pool or open water lifeguarding; experience at the supervisory level preferred.
